Learning to drive in Roseville: I-80 auxiliary lanes and SR 65 ramp meters
Interstate 80 through Roseville carries heavy commute traffic toward Sacramento. Caltrans says about 82,000 people travel between Placer and Sacramento counties for work (opens in a new tab) each day. Its auxiliary lane project added an eastbound lane from State Route 65 to Rocklin Road, with a two-lane exit there. It also added a fifth westbound lane near Douglas Boulevard, whose exit shrank from two lanes to one. Caltrans announced completion (opens in a new tab) in June 2025. Check exit lane markings early, since the Douglas exit layout changed.
State Route 65 links Roseville with Rocklin and Lincoln. In 2019, Caltrans began anytime ramp metering (opens in a new tab) on southbound SR 65 entrances, so meters can run whenever traffic is heavy. Meters sit on ramps from Pleasant Grove, Blue Oaks and Sunset boulevards. It was the first anytime metering in the greater Sacramento Valley region. Stop behind the line when the meter shows red. Go on green, then build speed on the ramp before you merge.
