Driving in Placer County: Interstate 80 grades and truck lanes
Interstate 80 is the big driving test in Placer County. It climbs steadily from the foothills into the Sierra Nevada. Between Colfax and Alta, Caltrans says loaded trucks lose speed on the long grade. Few chances to pass lead some drivers to speed and drive recklessly. Its Alta pavement project (opens in a new tab) lengthens the eastbound truck-climbing lane at Long Ravine Bridge, with construction listed from April to November 2026. Practice this stretch in daylight with a parent, and pass trucks only where a second lane opens.
Higher up, the Blue Canyon project (opens in a new tab) adds another eastbound truck-climbing lane at three spots between Crother Road and Nyack Road. It also builds a wildlife crossing, because many crashes there have involved animals. Caltrans lists construction from April 2026 through December 2029, so expect work zones for several seasons. In winter, chain controls (opens in a new tab) can change quickly, and the speed limit while chains are required is 25 or 30 mph. Carry chains that fit your tires, and practice putting them on at home before your first snow trip.
