Learning to drive in Lincoln: golf carts, NEV lanes and the McBean Park Drive bridge

Lincoln shares its streets with golf carts and small electric cars. The city calls itself NEV and golf cart friendly (opens in a new tab), with route maps and a master plan updated in December 2024. On Lincoln Boulevard, a railroad crossing phase (opens in a new tab) finished in 2023 shortened pedestrian crossings and added NEV lanes on several side streets. These vehicles travel slowly, often in their own lane. Pass one only when the way ahead is clear, and watch for them turning out of side streets.

McBean Park Drive floods in severe storms, and its bridge is being replaced. The new bridge (opens in a new tab) raises the roadway, lengthens the span and grows from two lanes to three. Wide shoulders will serve neighborhood electric vehicles and bicycles. Construction was scheduled to begin in 2025 and finish in 2027. Never drive into a flooded road, because even shallow moving water can stall a car or push it off the pavement.
