Learning to drive in San Clemente: I-5 near the county line

In San Clemente, Interstate 5 and its interchanges belong to Caltrans, not the city (city traffic page (opens in a new tab)). South of Avenida Pico, I-5 has four regular lanes each way. Caltrans and OCTA have proposed a carpool lane (opens in a new tab) in each direction along that 3.5-mile stretch to the San Diego County line. Public scoping for the plan ran in summer 2022. Enter a carpool lane only where the lines are broken, and only with enough people inside.

Caltrans also did safety work on I-5 (opens in a new tab) in San Clemente, Dana Point and San Juan Capistrano. The 2.5-mile job covered I-5 between Stonehill Drive and Camino de Estrella. It was set to upgrade the concrete median barrier and add lighting for night visibility. Work was set to begin in June 2024 and finish in spring 2025, mostly with nighttime closures. Coastal fog can still cut your view at night. Keep your low beams on, ease off the gas and widen the gap ahead.
