Learning to drive in Sanger: Academy Avenue, the rail tracks and people on foot
Sanger's Active Transportation Plan (opens in a new tab) says Academy Avenue is hard to cross on foot or by bike. Traffic there is heavy and fast, and railroad tracks run just to the east. The May 2024 plan, linked from the city's engineering page (opens in a new tab), also notes sidewalk gaps near Jensen Avenue and near the tracks. In the years it studied, most fatal crashes in Sanger involved someone walking or biking. On Academy, scan both curbs for people waiting to cross. Where a sidewalk ends, expect walkers at the edge of the road, and give them room.
Sanger police run a traffic safety unit (opens in a new tab) with two motorcycle officers and a sergeant. The unit holds DUI checkpoints, runs saturation patrols and helps at parades. If a signal fails, the city's traffic signals page (opens in a new tab) says to call Public Works on weekdays or police after hours. At a signal with no lights, stop and treat the corner as an all-way stop. Take turns, and enter only after cross traffic has stopped. At a checkpoint, follow every officer's direction.
