Driving in Fresno County: tule fog, Shaver Lake and roundabouts

Winter brings a hazard that summer practice never shows. The National Weather Service says tule fog (opens in a new tab) forms each winter in California's Central Valley. A cool, moist layer of air near the ground, clear skies above and light winds produce exceptionally thick fog on many nights. The season runs from late October through February. Get some night driving done in early fall, so your first dark drive and your first fog drive do not happen together.

The county reaches well beyond the valley floor. On State Route 168 near the Shaver Lake shoreline, Caltrans plans a 780-foot viaduct (opens in a new tab) that moves the road 63 feet into the hillside to straighten it. On State Route 180, it plans a roundabout at Dickenson Avenue (opens in a new tab) because the collision rate there exceeds the statewide average. Before a mountain trip, practice holding a steady speed through curves, and learn to yield at a roundabout on a quiet weekday.
