Driving in Solano County: I-80 express lanes, truck scales and a Delta ferry

Heavy traffic on Interstate 80 is the main local challenge in Solano County. About 215,000 vehicles a day pass Air Base Parkway in Fairfield, according to Caltrans. Express lanes opened in December 2025 between Red Top Road and I-505, running 18 miles each way (Solano I-80 Express Lanes (opens in a new tab)). Buses, motorcycles and cars with three or more people ride free, and two-person carpools pay half. Learn the lane rules with a parent before using them. Enter and exit only where the striping allows.

Trucks are another factor. At the westbound Cordelia truck scales, short ramps let trucks back up onto I-80. That raises the risk of rear-end crashes. A new facility is being built, with a tentative end date of December 2029 (Cordelia project (opens in a new tab)). In the Delta, the free Real McCoy II ferry (opens in a new tab) carries up to eight vehicles between Ryer Island and Rio Vista. Leave extra space behind slowing trucks near the scales, and on the ferry, drive on slowly and follow the crew.
