Learning to drive in Vallejo: Sonoma Boulevard and the SR 37 diverging diamond
Sonoma Boulevard, State Route 29, is Vallejo's main north-south street, and it is being remade. The SR 29 project (opens in a new tab) repaves about six miles from Maritime Academy Drive to the Napa County line. It adds bike lanes, curb bulb-outs, lighting and clearer crosswalks. Between Curtola Parkway and Mississippi Street, it trims travel lanes and adds a two-way left-turn lane. Caltrans lists completion for late fall 2026. Use that center lane only to begin or end a left turn, never to pass.
State Route 37 brings a newer layout. The Caltrans Solano County newsletter (opens in a new tab) marked the July 7, 2026 completion of a diverging diamond interchange at SR 37 and Fairgrounds Drive. Inside the diamond, traffic shifts to the left side of the road and later crosses back at signals. In September 2026, Caltrans also held night lane and ramp closures on I-80 (opens in a new tab) in Vallejo, including the connector to I-780. In the diamond, trust the lane lines and signals, and don't drift toward oncoming cars.
