Teens in Yuba City take the same 30-hour online driver education course as everywhere in California, then the permit test at a DMV office. The nearest DMV field office is the Yuba City office at 1570 Poole Boulevard, Yuba City, 0.7 to 1.6 miles in a straight line from Yuba City's public high schools.
Where do Yuba City teens take the permit and drive tests?
The Colusa office is open only part of the week, so check the days before you go. None of California's 162 permit-testing DMV offices lists weekend hours, so plan a school-day visit. Book an appointment on the DMV appointments page (opens in a new tab), and arrive well before 4:30 p.m.: knowledge tests are not given after that. What to bring is on our permit visit checklist.

Learning to drive in Yuba City: a new SR 99 signal and a swing bridge on SR 20
State Route 99 is Yuba City's main road south, and a busy crossing on it now has a signal. In April 2025, Caltrans began building a traffic signal (opens in a new tab) where SR 99 meets Oswald Road in Sutter County. Oswald Road was closed to through traffic while crews worked. The signal is meant to reduce collisions and handle future growth, and work was projected to finish by December 2025. When a new signal appears on a familiar road, slow on the approach. Stop for a yellow light if you safely can.
West of town, State Route 20 has two very different spots. At Humphrey Road, Caltrans counted 13 collisions in five years (opens in a new tab), mostly broadside crashes, and plans a roundabout or a signal. Farther west, the Meridian Bridge over the Sacramento River is a swing bridge (opens in a new tab) that opens once a year for inspection. On May 7, 2026, drivers faced delays of up to 20 minutes during three openings. At rural crossroads, look both ways twice before you pull out.
